Sunset Silhouette Portraiture

I had a great opportunity to photograph a lovely family in the Saguaro National Park area in and around Vail and Tucson Arizona.  It was towards sunset when I mentioned to them to try a family silhouette portrait while the sun was going down.  I quickly put my tripod and camera in place and was able to get a lovely silhouette of a great family.  The wind was blowing quite a bit that day, but we were still able to manage.

Silhouettes are a wonderful way to convey drama, mystery, emotion and mood.  I love them because they don’t give the viewer a clear picture of everything but leave part of the image up to their imagination to wonder about.

To take a picture like this you need to have your camera in manual mode and expose for the sky.  You don't need to worry about having a lot of detail in the foreground, and you must turn off your flash, or remove it from the top of the camera.  Be sure to focus in on your subjects and try to eliminate as much clutter as you can to help isolate your subject.
